Staying positive in a negative world

by Louise Breland

Created on: April 29, 2008

Music is the healing force of the universe. In a world where there are so many negative things going on, it is hard to stay positive. I think that when you fill your life with music it will take away most of the negative edge, based on the type of music that you like to listen to.

When the day is rough and the news is blaring on every station about war, murder, rape and so much more added to the stress of your life, music can calm your savage beast. When I take the time out and settle down I put on something soft and slow something that has meaning but not too over bearing. If my mate is around I stop him and smile at him and then I ask him to slow dance with me. When he takes me in his arms I can feel some of the weight on his shoulders melt away even if it is just for the moment that the song last. It is a very important moment that and it could set the course of your evening together.

I step it up a notch and put something on that will help me to cook my dinner and feed my family with a smile. When I am listening to some smooth jazz and then move into some serious rhythm and blues my work is done. I will take the time to think about the things that affect my life and those around me when something soothing is playing softly in the background. Music also has a soothing affect on children. I don't have a problem with hip hop but when I need to chill out and I want the kids to chill too there is a compromise for what is pleasing to all of us.

Then there are the times when I need to just dance and in my home is the place to be. I will play something that will make me nod my head and then just get up and move my body. I can feel the tensions of my day just float away when I am getting my groove on. I even have a classical mode that relaxes me to the point of going into a peaceful sleep.

I throw in a really good book and find something on the television that will make me laugh instead of crying. I put my emotions out there and I share them with all who is around me, my joy of music and laughter and letting go and they in turn do the same thing, relax, smile, take a deep breath and be thankful of surviving another day in the life.
