Reflections: What America needs

by Will D. Curl

Created on: April 29, 2008

I am building a reputation for speaking my mind for better or worse. I do not write to pass the time or to show Helium that I know good grammar. I write to voice my opinion on issues that most in the media attempt to avoid. We have an opportunity this year to show
the rest of the world, that we as the Leaders of the Free World, practice what we preach.
We are going to send a Democratic Nominee into the Presidential General Election that will

be a first for the United States. Either a Women or a African-American Male will be our
Presidential Nominee.
I have felt comfortable with the notion that we as a country were ready for a Female
President. After all, England had a Female Prime Minister in Margaret Thatcher. We had a
Female Secretary of State. We were on our way. Hillary Clinton, the wife of Former President Bill Clinton, who served two terms at the end of the last century. She seemed
tailor made for the opportunity. Despite moral setbacks, Bill Clinton had a very successful
two terms in office. Now, Republicans will say that Reagonomics put that in motion. Isn't
it funny they set it up to work between 1992 and 2000 when Clinton was in charge.
At any rate I thought Hillary and the Clinton Political Machine had it in the bag. Then
out of no where came a Black Man who spoke of change in the way things were being done.
Lets do away with the hands being greased in Washington and get back to working for the
people. Now that was a new idea. The people began to rally around his cry, mostly the
young whos future is really at stake. Of course, this upset alot of Big Business across
the nation, eliminate Special Interests, eliminate lobbying, has the world gone mad?
Now we present the real barrier. This Black Mans name is Barack Obama. What is he, a
Terrorist? He has a Muslim name, he must be a Terrorist. The whispers began to circulate
through the smokey back rooms of America. No one really thought it was possible. Now it
was starting to look like reality. A Black Man could be the President of the United States.
The R-word was slowly surfacing to the top. Shake up the water and it will always happen.
We, as a nation, were finally going to have to face our prejudice. There are still those
who will not stand still for a Colored Man being President. The media has attempted to
associate Barack Obama with everything except being Osama Bin Ladins best friend, and I
think thats in the works.
I am a White male, I am a Democrat, but first and foremost, I am an American. I know
what lays just beneath the surface in many parts of our society. I do not try to sweep
it under the rug or act like it does not exist. It has been a part of what we were, but it
does not have to remain the substance of who we now are. I am not saying vote for Obama
because he is Black any more than I am saying vote for Clinton because she is a Women. Vote
for them because they are the right choice for what you want for our future. Don't allow
color or sex to influence your decision. This country made a bad political choice in 2000
and then again in 2004. We are suffering for that now. Let us not make the wrong choice
again. We have too many critical challenges, that must be faced and addressed properly in
the very near future. The world is watching. Our children, who deserve the best of what
we have to offer, are watching. Now, at this point in history, we must define who we are
and who we want to be. May God Bless us if we cannot overcome generations of fear and
prejudice for the hope of Liberty and Freedom.
