If you can spend your time doing something you love and it results in something that others can enjoy with you, that's a great source of joy. Scrapbooking brings many joys, but perhaps three of the main ones are a sense of accomplishment, resourcefulness, and community.
Since scrapbooking is such a constructive pastime, it's hard not to brim with happiness and a satisfying sense of accomplishment when a project is complete. It keeps photos from collecting dust in the closet or attic, it helps you remember the small details that might otherwise become hazy over time, and it gives simple, random items a new role as decorations for your treasured memories. It's a fun and interesting way to present your memories to others. Sure, your friends could flip through a photo album from your most recent vacation trip, but what if each page were full of interesting extras like maps, coins, and quotes in addition to your best photos?
Another source of scrapbooking joy is the creativity and resourcefulness you can employ in putting neat layouts together. As its name implies, scrapbooking at its roots is all about finding creative uses for scraps or other unexpected items. It's a challenge that really pays off. Things like buttons and paper trimmings that might otherwise be destined for the trash or recycling bin can find good homes on the pages of a scrapbook. With a touch of imagination, these items are recycled into art. They can have a productive purpose that anyone can sit down and enjoy.
Scrapbooking is not only a great creative outlet, but it's also a craft that inspires a welcoming sense of community. There's a reason that scrapbooking conventions, parties, and local crops are so popular. There's a reason that so many like-minded individuals flock to online scrapbooking communities to share their passion with one another and upload images of their layouts. Although there are plenty of scrapbooking contests, the craft is largely one of sharing ideas and fostering innovation. It spans the line between highly personal self-expression and connecting with others.
These joys come not just during the process of sitting down and arranging your materials into an artistic layout, but they're pleasures you can bask in even when the project is done. The finished product for any scrapbooking project will be something unique and creative. It can become a family heirloom that takes a special occasion or even an everyday activity and freezes it for posterity. It's something you can look back upon and enjoy not only the memories contained on the pages, but the thought and effort that you put into creating those very pages.
The accomplishment of a finished layout, the resourcefulness of using everyday items in unexpected ways, the friends you can make along the way... It's fun to flip through a scrapbook and feel the pages between your fingers, but it's undeniable that the greatest joys of scrapbooking come from the intangibles.
