Tips for including quotes on your scrapbook

Using quotes on your scrap-book pages can really make them come alive. As with other scrap-booking techniques, the trick is knowing which ones to use, and when to stop!

A quote can be anything from a few words to a whole poem. Choose which one you are going to use carefully, as they can completely alter the fell of a scrap-book page.

Using a quote can help point your readers towards the feeling you are trying to create with a page, can make them think about something meaningful to you, or can remind them of a particular time or season.

POEM

If you are going to use a poem, then you should choose a short one. A long poem can cover a large portion of the scrap-book page, and part of the point of scrap-booking is to have a variety of colors and textures fused onto a page to create one cohesive effect. One large poem can look plain and boring.

If you are going to use a famous quote, then do mention the name of the person who wrote it. It's not only polite, but it looks nice too!

SHORT QUOTE

Using short quotes can really lift a page, adding emphasis to the theme. Choose quotes that are short and to-the-point. You can use sad, thoughtful or witty quotes, depending on the mood you are trying to evoke.

You can also use quotes from people you know. If your uncle always said "Deary me, what a day", then you could include that on a page dedicated to him. If you have a birthday party and your youngest child points at the candles and says "Fire!", then that could be a good quote to put on the birthday cake page. Personal quotes like this can be effective and quite emotional, especially if you are creating a memory page of someone who has passed away.

HIGHLIGHTING THE QUOTE

Once you have chose your quote, choose an appropriate font to print it out in, and an appropriate size. Quite often, a variety of font sizes on one page looks nice. Keep the size the same and the font different, or use varying sizes and keep the font styles the same. You can even use colored ink in the printer to make your quote match the page.

Print your quote onto colored paper to either match or co-ordinate with the page you are creating. If you have a short quote, then layering backing papers up behind it will give emphasis to your words.

Of course, your quote doesn't have to be the main part of your page. In this case, you can print it onto transparent or semi-transparent paper so that it melts into the background, or print it out directly onto the backing paper you are using.

There are so many ways of using quotes. Trial and error will allow you to try them all. Spend time playing with your layouts before you stick anything down, and always try out more embellishments than you need you can always store them away for another day if you don't use them.

Happy scrap-booking!
