Breathing is the most important of all of our bodily functions and the only involuntary function that we can consciously control. Obviously we need to breathe to survive but how we breathe is directly related to how we feel.
Improper breathing can lead to several negative consequences. Characterized by rapid, shallow breaths, improper breathing reduces the level of carbon dioxide in blood, which reduces oxygen to the brain. Reduced oxygen in the bloodstream and brain can lead to fatigue, dizziness, tension and headache. Stress and nervousness are the leading causes for rapid, shallow breathing in most people. Another interesting point is that this type of breathing is contagious. If you are around someone that is stressed or nervous and breathing rapidly, your breathing will automatically match their breathing. For many of us, improper breathing has become a habit.
By employing proper breathing techniques, you will enjoy many health benefits. The way you breathe has an enormous impact on how you feel that cannot be underestimated. A calm person breathes slowly and deeply, feeling each breath fully and filling the lungs with air. Breathing in this manner results in many physical changes including relaxed muscles, better posture and a calmer attitude. It allows you to better manage tension and stress. The increased oxygen flow helps you feel more energized and can reduce tension and headaches. Deep, controlled breathing has also been shown to help with depression, anxiety and other stress-related disorders. Insomnia can even be lessened by deep breathing and relaxation techniques. Exercising is more effective when proper breathing techniques are used because the effectiveness of blood flow is maximized and metabolism is increased. This can lead to better and quicker weight loss. Proper breathing can lead to increased mental capacity and alertness as well and a greater sense of calmness and control.
It's easy to see how beneficial deep breathing is. However, deep breathing is a habit to be learned. That usually means breaking the habit of shallow breathing. With concentration and focus, this can definitely be accomplished. Meditation and yoga are two practices that are extremely helpful to focus on taking deep, filling breaths. Both of these practices have been practiced for thousands of years with great results and can easily be learned. Make an effort starting now to breathe deeply and see how much better you feel!
