Second wedding traditions are more focused on what cannot and should not be done (No Veils! No White! No Showers!) than in celebrating the joyous occasion itself. While a second-time bride may not need the traditional wedding shower goods, such as towels and kitchen gadgets, there is no reason her friends and family cannot or should not gather to celebrate. A second-time bride may not even feel comfortable setting up a registry, which can make gift-giving harder, so it's time to step outside the box and look beyond a ladies luncheon or tea party.
Like a bridal shower for a first-time bride, the style and preference of the honoree should be taken into consideration. Since no two brides are alike, here is a wide range of options for an encore bride.
A couple's shower may suit the style of those who have been there, done that with the traditional gender roles assigned in the wedding planning process. If the couple has an interest or hobby they enjoy together, such as wine tasting, guests can bring a favorite bottle of wine, or spoil the honorees with some of the fabulous wine gadgets and accessories on the market these days. In lieu of traditional shower games, the hosts can organize a wine and cheese tasting, and enlist the help of a sommelier to educate the crowd.
If this is a second marriage for both bride and groom, they may be dealing with blended family issues. Instead of a household goods shower, why not make it a family-friendly event? Giving board games, sporting goods and other gear that promotes the family's interests will make the children feel included in the festivities. This may also be a great opportunity for the bride's friends and family to get to know the groom's children, or vice versa. A casual barbecue is the perfect setting for an event meant to include a wide range of ages.
A more traditional bride-to-be may enjoy the camaraderie of a girls-only gathering, minus unwrapping the blenders and spatulas. A spa day or girls' weekend getaway is an ideal option for the bride who is more interested in some pampering with the girls than Pampered Chef. The host can ask that the guests chip in for a treatment or two for the guest of honor, rather than purchase a typical shower gift. Time away from the stress of everyday life coupled with girl-bonding time will be treasured as the big day looms near.
Whatever style shower you choose, take comfort in knowing that the offer to host a party celebrating such an exciting event is a gift in itself. Take some time to reflect on what you think the bride would enjoy before you dive into planning. Most importantly, don't forget to toast the guest-of-honor and take a moment to enjoy the party yourself!
