virus scanning software should be left on, as if you disable them they will no longer protect your computer from startup until it has been opened.
Once these options have been set to your liking you may click the apply button and windows will ask you to restart your system. At this point a user will find that the system will start much faster than normal. This is just the first step however, as there are many other aspects of a computer that can make it run slow. Most programs keep a list of files that they may need in the future in a cache. When this room runs out it can easily impede your ability to load software, or view websites. To take care of this problem you should delete the temporary internet files and the temporary Windows files.
Internet explorer and Mozzilla both keep a directory with files from websites you have visited. When you access a web page all the images, and some user information are stored on your system. In order to speed up a web browser one can change the settings to hold less space so that their system is deleting files more frequently, and can manually remove those files. In IE, navigate to tools, then internet options. Assuming by now most people have IE 7, there is a handy delete button that a user can use to erase all IE files. Once gone they will speed your system, and all files will re-download as you visit more pages. Once you have pressed delete, select the option to delete all files. After a few moments all files will be deleted (as indicated by the status bar that appears).
Erasing your Windows temporary files is just as easy a task as IE's. Simply press the start button and enter CMD and press enter. This will bring up a small black window called the command prompt. From here simply type "/rd %temp% /s" and press enter. This will completely remove the temporary directory, and free the space Windows needs. Again, this directory will be re-created once you start to use your system.
These steps will create a remarkably faster system for you. Just like a car, your PC must occasionally be tuned to keep it working properly. There are many other things that can be done to speed up your system, but the above steps will certainly help to keep your system happy and healthy!
