You have not loved until you've loved a Boston Terrier. The "American Gentleman", as the Boston is sometimes known, is a tuxedo wearing, card carrying goofball. He is also one of the few dogs that originated in the United States!

The Boston, a nonsporting dog, is muscularly compact and square faced with large brown eyes, pointy ears and a short tail. Most are black, white, brindle or some combination thereof. Certain qualities are necessary for showing a Boston; these can be found online at http://www.akc.org/breeds/boston_terrier/ . However, for the simple pet owner, Bostons can run the gamut from runt sized to upwards of 25 pounds. They may have uncommon markings, little to no tail, bigger than usual bug eyes or any number of traits. The most important thing is that your Boston is healthy, no matter how she looks.

There breed has a history of certain medical problems, most commonly dealing with their eyes, legs and muzzles. They can be prone to cataracts as well as cherry eye, an affliction where the eyelid becomes prolapsed. Patellar luxation is a condition where the kneecap moves out of its proper position. This can be a congenital defect or it may be caused by an actual trauma. Bostons are known as one of the brachycephalic breeds. Due to their short snouts, they are prone to snoring and snorting; sometimes sounding as if they are hyperventilating. Sensitivity to extreme heat and cold are also common in this breed because of their snouts. A Boston should never be left outside in either extreme, nor should they be overexerted physically. That said, the Boston does need ample exercise to maintain its muscular frame and to get out some of its infamous energy.

Boston Terriers are funny, hyper and willful little guys! They are smart, but also stubborn, a trait to keep in mind while training your puppy. If you don't get the upper hand on your Boston, he will get the upper hand on you. These dogs are excellent in agility training along with being good with children and people in general. They don't always make great guard dogs but most will bark if they sense something "strange". Bostons just want to be a part of the family; they enjoy snuggling under the covers with you or sitting with you, as long as they feel connected to their humans.

Finally, Bostons are quite easy to groom and keep clean. Their short coats do not shed heavily, but they must be brushed or combed; only bathe them when necessary. Clip their nails occasionally as they may become irritating when left too long. Be sure to clean their eyes gently to avoid tearstains and eye disorders. As with all dogs, check regularly for ticks.

Boston Terriers are great family dogs. Their size and temperament make them easy to live with and to love. Remember, there are many dog rescue and adoption organizations, so please don't buy your Boston from a store or backyard breeder!
