Jesus came to be the Savior of a lost and dying world. He came to give His life for the sins of the world, from Adam to the last days. To accomplish this His blood had to be fully human, a human was the cause of the fall, and fully divine to be free of the inherent sin. Sin came into the world through man and the penalty for that sin had to be paid for by a man who had no sin. We can find the genealogical line of Mary in Luke, chapter three.
In Mathew, we find the line of Joseph, stating the term "begat" which was used to show the father and son. In Luke we find the term "son of" which was used to show adoptions, or son in laws. The women where not used for genealogical purposes. Therefore, when you read the birth record in Luke you find the record of Mary and not that of Joseph. The record in Mathew has the record back to David, which was necessary for one to sit on the throne of David. This was the message of Mathew that Jesus is the King of the Jews, and He would sit on the throne of David.
The earthly lineage of Jesus has only one parent to trace and that is thought Mary. The presentation in Luke is Jesus as the Son of Man. Luke wanted to show the humanity of Jesus. The lineage is presented using the name of Joseph, but with the term "son of" instead of "begat." The lineage through Mary has a different line than that of Joseph until David and then the line merges again to Adam, the first man. There is also another reason for this lineage. Through Joseph, the line goes through a king named Jehoiakim, or Coniah. We read in Jeremiah that Coniah was not to have any of his seed sit upon the throne. Because of this prophecy the lineage of Joseph was never to have a king, but the lineage of Mary went through Nathan the son of David and Bathsheba thus fulfilling the line of David while bypassing Coniah.
For Jesus to be the Savior who can wash away the sins of the world He had to be all man and all God. Therefore we find that he had a human mother who was chosen by God to bear the Savior. She was not a divine being put here with no mother or father, but had a lineage back to David. How else could Jesus claim to the Son of Man and the Son of God?
