There are some things in life that just don't make sense. How "just the one" drink always leads to several trays of shots and monster hangover, women who find Russell Brand attractive and men in general. However, it seems to me that women can be far more confusing. If there are things I can't figure out, being one myself, what hope is there for all the poor men out there?
First of all, can someone please explain why it seems that all my female friends insist on going to the toilet in pairs? If you're old enough to drink, vote and to get married then surely you are more than capable of a solo visit to a pub/club toilet? I an understand that sometimes you might just want to have a private (and slightly more private) conversation, but some girls I know will ask everyone in the group if they need to go and will wait until someone else is ready. Maybe it's a confidence issue, or perhaps they don't want to go off alone, but it still seems rather strange to me.
It's the same with women that have a fear of spiders. Yes they're not pleasant, but a tiny spider versus a full grown human? Unless we're in a new version of Arachnophobia, it's unlikely to result in a David v Goliath outcome. That tiny spider is probably a heck of a lot more frightened that you are, perhaps because it's not as if the spider can squash you with one foot or flush you down the plughole. That said, I have seen grown women (and some men) run at full flight out of a room in panic. On wandering casually into said room, it's usually down to me to remove the spider/full grown monster. Cup + piece of paper = one happy (and alive) spider and a non panicking human.
Some fears may have their basis in previous experience, but perhaps its time we got rational. There are plenty of bigger things to worry about: lack of a career, wanting to move out before that ominous thirtieth birthday, or even when I will eventually get my hair under control. Maybe having smaller, possibly irrational fears is a way of evading the larger situations and not having to deal with these things. Lets face facts: its time we got our priorities right.
