As a wide-eyed rookie in the NBA, Blake Ahearn is slowly, but surely making a name for himself. The 6'2, 190 pound point guard out of Missouri State has taken the long road to the NBA. While going undrafted in the 2007 NBA Draft, Ahearn has overcome the long odds that come with being an unsigned rookie in the League. Through hard work in the NBA Developmental League, Ahearn has earned himself a position on the Miami Heat. Known as a gym rat, Ahearn was named the Developmental League Rookie of the Year, while playing for the Dakota Wizards. While with the Wizards, he averaged 19 points, with a 96% free-throw percentage, shooting 49% from the field and 44% from 3-point range in 41 games. The 96% free throw percentage is a shocking number. Through 12 games with the Miami Heat at the end of this season, Ahearn was able to carry over that trend with only one miss from the charity stripe (30 or 31). By the end of his college career, he finished as a 94.6% free throw shooter, 435 for 460, the all-time best percentage. He also holds a single season record at 97.5%
While at Missouri State, Ahearn was a first-team All-Missouri Valley Conference selection in both 2006, and 2007. Known for his deft passing and solid defense, he was a stalwart for the Bears during all four of his years in college. Out of college, there weren't many scouts who predicted an NBA career for Ahearn. But, through an already famous work ethic, he has developed into a solid player.
The Miami Heat's horrific season, was a blessing for D-Leaguers such as Ahearn. The Heat ended the regular season with a total of five players on their roster from the NBADL. Some would call it giving up to have a better chance to gain the first overall pick in the lottery, but Ahearn would call it an opportunity. He has taken advantage of his limited minutes, by scoring a team-high 15 points on March 27 in a loss to the Detroit Pistons.
Other Notes: Ahearn attended De Smet Jesuit High School in St. Louis, Missouri. He was an All-Metro selection his Junior and Senior Years and an All-State Selection his Junior Year. His team was state runner up his Junior Year.
