Too Smart
Swish. "Ballin'!" "Nice!" I say. "Another game?" "No, I lose every time. You know that. What has it been? 8 years?" "Well you ain't that bad. It was a close game." "Only cause you went easy on me." "Yeah, okay. I am the best," my friend says knowingly. "Come on, let's get out of here."
Me? I'm Simon. The one who's "ballin'" is my best friend, Tom. We go way back, all the way back to kindergarten. As usual we finish up a few games of 21 after school. And as usual he wins. As he says, I'm not bad at basketball. I'm actually pretty good at most sports considering the "smarty-pants" that I am. But Tom, now, he's ready for the pros. Whenever we play a little 2 on 2(sometimes even 3); just the two of us can beat any team they can pitch at us. Of course, Tom is always carrying our team, but I'm not useless. Like I said before, I'm kinda average when it comes to sports.
Now if we're talking about school, then it's the other way around for Tom and me. I'm a straight A student, while Tom on the other hand is your average 3 C's, 2 B's, and an A kind of student. He has a class he's good in, math; a couple he get's by in, social studies and reading; and there's the rest of them he hasn't got a clue about except for the fact I'm helping him all the time. But then again, I'm only as good as I am in sports because of Tom.
"So, you think you can "tackle" that essay and the science yourself? Or do you need some help?" "Naw, man, I think I got it this time. Kay?" "Sure." "Talk to ya later." "See you tomorrow."
Tomorrow came, but Tom didn't. After school, I went over to Tom's house to find out what happened.
"What happened, Tom? Why didn't you go to school today?" "About that. I kinda didn't get to doing my homework last night." "If you didn't understand something you should have just asked me about it." "Yeah, I didn't get around to it because I forgot about it." "Well, how did that happen?" "You know how I had to visit my aunt yesterday, right? Well, after I got home at about 9 last night I played some Madden 08. Then my mom told me to go to sleep, so I went to sleep." "I see. Well that means you got even more homework than before. Here, I brought today's assignments." "Well, ain't this a merry Christmas? You wanna help me with the presents?" Sigh. "Fine."
8th grade has to be the easiest year, but Tom having a hard time as it is. So I don't understand how he's going to make it through high school. He's lucky we're both going to the same high school next year. He'd
