I held out my hand, and my fist closed in fear,
It grabbed for a branch, but the brambles were near,
My heart was pounding, what had I done wrong,
Inside I was screaming, his arms were so strong.
I'd looked at the moon, and the stars in the sky,
I'd begged and pleaded, oh God tell me why?
Why on an evening so beautifully calm,
I deserved to be raped and come to such harm.
Why did he leave the pub where he drank,
Far too tipsy and with breath that stank,
Why did he see me go in to the park,
I was so young and naive, unafraid of the dark.
I was just a child, on my way back home,
My Parents had said I could walk home alone,
I'd crept in the house, what else could I do,
I thought it was best that they never knew.
There's a pain inside me, that's deep in my heart,
I vowed it would stay there till both did depart,
My parents are gone now, couldn't hurt them you see,
Now I write this poem for my children and me.
Remember I told you, don't bring your drink home,
I still have the fear of the man who's unknown,
Well I still cannot cope with a drunk, in my home,
The smell brings the fear that ALWAYS I've known.
