Maybe one way to answer this question is with another question: Does believing in God truly affect me and the way that I view things or is this just another philosophical question to waste my time? I know that some would find the question a little cruel but it needs to be asked so that down the line the question of God's overall authority might finally come into play. Any person can believe in God/YHWH/Adonai/Jesus Christ but in the end still have nothing to do with him. Now I know that some will think that it truly has to do with a person's relationship with a church or the Church but that's not what I am talking about. Any person can say, "I believe in God" while the rest of the statement is, "but I don't believe that he has any right to tell me what I can and can't do."
Believing in God and being a follower of his teachings means believing that He created the universe and the Earth along with all life on this blue ball without the need of time and chance because he knew what he was doing in the first place. Believing in God means that since he created the universe and Earth he has full authority to do with it whatever he wants. It also means that we must accept the responsibilities he has given us for taking of our planet and taking care of each other. We just have to make sure that we keep at least one thing in perspective: God is our creator, not nature/Mother Nature. It also means that we can't blame him for the ways that we tend to mess things up.
Believing in God means accepting his commands as laid out in the Bible and the Ten Commandments for which we will receive many rewards whether in heaven or even possibly on Earth. Rewards that can't be measured by a banker but can be measured in peace, joy and contentment whether we are rich as a king or poor as the poorest person on Earth. It also means accepting those times when God's commands contradict common held beliefs and doing what God commands instead of what every other person would do even if certain consequences will come with that decision.
Yet one thing we may not realize is that believing in God is a life long journey where we will find ourselves struggling with him and his Word while at other times the journey will not seem so bad and not some question we can simply tackle in one afternoon. Believing in God and accepting his authority over your life means accepting a life where your beliefs will be ridiculed and you'll be thought of as being a crazy person. I know that many believe differently
