and as painful a process as this can be for a parent, it can be a life changing one for your kids!
Things to watch for if you suspect your child is using club drugs:
Look for a change in grades, or interests. Did their music taste go from folk to heavy metal? Or from death metal to psychedelic? It can go either way really, but the biggest give away that I was hanging out with people way too old for me was my tastes changing rapidly into more and more adult tastes. Also, look for changes in sleep patterns, more or less sleep is not only a sign of stress or depression, but also a sign that their bodies need more rest. Drugs will take their toll quickly on your body making 8 hours not enough sleep to recover from the damage done. Finally, just ask. I would have respected my parents way more had they simply asked me, but they assumed things, and voluntarily put themselves in denial. Painful though it may be, it's important you get the truth, if you suspect they are lying when they say they don't do drugs, then test them. If it comes out negative explain to them WHY you felt the need to test them and inquire about all the recent changes in their life. Get the down and dirty facts, and don't be ashamed, you have a job to do and one day they will mature and realize that and thank you for helping them.
As difficult and dark a subject as it may be, drugs are a subject not talked about in a real setting. Often times programs are designed to scare kids away from them. Personally I wanted to fight that fear. I can't stand being afraid of something, and when I was a teenager I refused to be afraid of something until I experienced for myself what the big deal was. So be real with your children, talk to them like mature young adults and be respectful when they talk back. This fight against drugs could go much easier if we all just took a little advice from the experienced people we have in the world.
