Hydroponic gardens: An overview of growing plants without soil

This paper is in no way a serious paper! It got me an A so I'm happy:)

Introduction

Last year that I was in this class, I came in a month late and wasn't able to do the hydroponics unit. This year however, I was determined that I would grow my tomato plant to the best of my ability. Each day before I came to school I listened to "The Final Countdown" to get myself pumped and ready to take on this challenge. After one week both plants died a horrible and miserable death. It was very sad and I don't have the chance next year to do this. If I did, I would have the guy from "A Troll in Central Park" come and help me with his green thumb. With green thumbs anything is possible.

Description of Setup

Austin and I looked on the internet for different ideas and ways to set up our hydroponics unit. There were several things to choose from; use a two liter bottle cut in half, use a tote with holes cut in the lid, or buy something cool that looked like something strait out of Star Trek. With all these options what were we to do? Of course we went for the Star Trek thing but it cost so much money and the credit card that we stole had gotten cancelled and wouldn't work anymore. So being the super scientist that we are we came up with our own plan that was so sophisticated, only great minds like ours could comprehend its magnificent. We used two chop sticks that we probed through the dirt and hung them in a trash can full of water with a bubbler in the bottom.

Maintenance

To begin things off, we put strait water in our container that some may call a blue trash can. After a couple of days we noticed odd coloration developing in the plant. Being the kinds of people that are always on top of things, we decided that we would add fertilizer the next class period. When we came back, Austin slowly poured in the blue substance as I yelled at the plant "Eat your food!" I figured that talking to the plants would make them feel like we were on a more personal level and it would help them to grow. I was dead wrong. My tone of voice only hindered the plants production and we slowly saw the plant decay and die. We listened to Mrs. Staheli and only put enough to make the water a light blue, but I knew from the tone in her voice she was a liar and just wanted to see us fail. I knew she was lying from the feeling in my stomach. Maybe it was the peanut butter, jalapeo pancakes that I ate for breakfast that morning.
