I come from immigrants and innocents,
Europeans and natives, and from poor,
Hardworking people who cared, and
Who believed in helping those with less.
I come from union activists and alcoholics and
From misery and hope, and longing and love.
From those who believed in freedom and in all the
Opportunities we have been offered.
I come from soldiers and pacifists and the families backing them.
I'm from loyal and sentimental men and many strong women
In whose bountiful kitchens there were frugal times, too,
When they didn't know if there'd be enough, but there was.
I come from anger and depression and loss,
From humor and kindness and love,
From holiness and humanness, and all that is real, and
From people and places too numerous to count.
I come from then and I come from now.
My own person, my own values and beliefs,
Formed by past, shared by those I cherish, and
Ready for the future challenges and all.
