Poetry: Turning forty

by D. J. Poe

Created on: April 28, 2008

I don't know what it is

'bout turning forty as a man.

You see that new convertible,

And trade the family van.

Of course you've just divorced

Someone you can no longer stand.

You see the kids on weekends,

They say, "Dad's a different man".

Of course you've started college

Just to finish that degree,

You started 20 years ago

It's coeds, can't you see.

Bosley is expensive, so is the Lasic plan.

Convertibles need flowing hair,

And contacts gather sand.

The Bowflex in the corner,

Gets used three times a week.

You need that six-pack in those abs

And tighten up those cheeks.

But one day you'll be sixty,

And start to loose your teeth.

You'll want a vintage Oldsmobile,

And bones that do not creak.

The new hair still does grow,

And each day it gets more gray.

The Lasic, well, you need your glasses

Now to find your way.

But 20 years ago, when that new crisis

Had kicked in.

You were only 40,

And not like older men.
