Poetry: Turning forty

by E K Stapleton

Created on: April 28, 2008

The innocence of youth
Has passed me by
There's no getting it back
No matter how I try

The years have added up
Forty to be precise
Oh to go back again
Wouldn't that be nice

No way on earth
Not in your life
I'd rather jabbed
With a large butcher knife

It took a long time
Now I finally have peace
My outlook on life
Has a brand new lease

The trials and tribulations
Presented during youth
I'd sooner have the dentist
With no anesthetic pull a tooth

Forty years of experience
Have got me here today
The fulfillment that I sought
Was always kept at bay

My husband was a cheater
We got a divorce
Settled in my favor
Kept the house of course

Children are grown
Don't need much of my time
If desired for dinner
I can just have wine

I'm free as a bird
To go as I please
Every chance that I get
The opportunity I seize

I'm having a blast
The time of my life
I'd never go back
To relive all the strife

The last forty years
Carry few regrets
I know the forty to come
Will be the best ones yet
