10 Cool Facts about Origami
Here are ten trivia tidbits to share with your kids are you are busy coming up with new designs and making origami creations together.
1. The word "Origami" comes from two Japanese words: Oru, which means "to fold", and Kami, which means "paper". Sounds like a good name to me!
2. In the early days, only rich and powerful people had origami, because paper was so expensive.
3. The Japanese people use origami not only to make decorations, but also hats and umbrellas!
4. Samurai warriors used to give each other origami gifts as good-luck charms.
5. Sometimes, Japanese lovers would use origami to fold up their love letters to keep other people from reading them. You can do this too: Write a secret message to a friend, then turn it into an origami project. Only you and your friend will know it's there!
6. The Japanese used to make special origami butterflies for a bride and groom when they got married.
7. The first origami book wasn't written until 1797. Before that, mothers passed down the skill to their children.
8. Some people have created a special type of origami, called "Moneygami", where they use paper money to create the images that are printed on the money.
9. Origami doesn't just have to be still life. There is also "action origami" that is built to have moving parts, like birds that fly.
10. Scientists are planning to launch origami paper airplanes into outer space!
