Poetry: Bottom of the barrel

by M. J. Schlagle

Created on: April 27, 2008

Prices rise and tempers climb,
the manipulation is quite sublime.
As speculators build a shrine,
to the bottom of the barrel.

Mother earth just shakes her head,
as we pull up to the pump in dread
hoping that they've not been bled
to the bottom of the barrel.

You hear it on the evening news,
every night they sing the blues.
They keep searching for the clues
at the bottom of the barrel.

They speak of this and tell us that
It's all been caused by a minor spat.
Suck it in while the rich get fat
on the bottom of the barrel.

It's all because we lived in haste,
not really caring what we waste
Just as long as we get a taste.
of the bottom of the barrel.

We are told there's nothing to fear,
by the OPEC lords who slyly sneer.
But the picture becomes quite clear,
we're at the bottom of the barrel.

What you hear you may not like,
my best advise is to get a bike.
Tell the gas gods to take a hike
to the bottom of the barrel.
