Best museums in Miami

There are a number of museums in Miami, Florida that give us an insight to the cultures that make up the city. They acknowledge works of various sorts and not just paintings or sculptures. There are newly built museums while there are those that have been around for decades.

The newest museum built museum is the Miami Art Museum built in 1996. It displays work of contemporary artists. Some of the artists that have their work exhibited are Jos Bedia, Duval-Carri, Joseph Cornell, and Marcel Duchamp. MAM receives funding from public and private venues.

If you are looking for a museum that explores nature then you may want to go to Vizcaya Museum and Gardens. This museum displays artwork in their main building but also have 10 acres of gardens. There is a historic village with a hardwood hammock outside. The museum was built in 1916 and is owned by the county of Miami-Dade. There are various events that the museum schedules including Global Youth Service Day and a family program: Vizual Arts.

One of the oldest museums in Miami is the Gold Coast Railroad Museum built in 1957. This place exhibits various trains that are available for rides. This museum caters to children and offers free admission along with free rides on some trains on Wednesdays only. Regular admission is $3 for children and $5 for adults. On May 3rd which is Family Appreciation Day admission is also free. There are bounce houses, coloring activities, model trains, and 10 percent off the cost of Thomas the train merchandise. Another event coming soon is Day out with Thomas.

The Historical Museum of Southern Florida has been opened since 1979. It showcases art work that tells the story of the history of southern Florida and the Caribbean. There are about 13,000 pieces of artwork on display and 6,850 artifacts. This is one of the largest private museums in America.

There are a few more museums to see when in Miami. Miami Children's Museum is another museum catered to children. This place was built in 1983 and extended in 2003. It has 12 galleries, classrooms, gift shop, a resource center, and an auditorium. The idea of the museum is to educate and entertain children of all cultures. Two other museums to see are the Latin American Art Museum which exhibits Latin Art and Weeks Air Museum which displays restored and preserved aircrafts from World War II. Both places were built in the early 90's.
