Why we make mistakes

by Robert Agee

Created on: April 27, 2008

We make mistakes because we are human. And making mistakes is the basic way we learn. Take this example for a moment. A child see a square hole. He tries to stick a round peg in it. Of course it does not fit. Through that process he will take every shape and try it until he finds the right one. Once he has found the right a couple of times, then he will automatically go for the square peg. Mistakes are the basis of trial and error and can be applied to almost every aspect of life. If you do something, perhaps the wrong way, then you learn not to do things that way again. Without this process we would do everything automatically right, and would be perfect, thus life would be boring. Therefore the process must take place in order for us to progress through life, whether it is learning to drive, or having a good marriage. So the question being why do we make mistakes, I would say the total answer to that is that humans are flawed and enable for us to progress and evolve , sometimes we must go through trial and error, which may involve making many mistakes before we get it right.

Now some people have a defect where when they make a mistake at something and it comes out wrong, they quit doing it. That is the defeatism that kills alot of people's ambitions. That is the thing that we need to avoid. That defeatist's attitude. How many Picassos and Van Goh's and Mic Jaggers are out there that never made it because they made an incorrect choice and quit? How many important people have quit before finding there way is the important question?

So my advice to those people that maybe out there that may have made major mistakes in there lives is this: You must keep going, you must keep trying no matter what. And if you make a mistake , or have made them on the past , then you know better next time on what to do. The point is don't give up tomorrow is a new day. The only mistake you really make is not getting back up on the horse, so to speak! So when you make a mistake, take a deep breath, step back and look where you went wrong. Find an alternative way to go, and implement that decision, just dont give up, and a mistake is worth making.
