Tips for starting your computer faster with Vista

to make the desired changes. You should only disable the programs that you know do not need to run on startup.

FEATURES AND OPTIONS

In addition to startup items, there may also be a number of features and options turned on that aren't really necessary for your day-to-day computing activities. A look at "Windows Features" can be a good place to start when looking for optional components that you can turn off. To get there, go to the Control Panel and then to "Programs and Features" (or, of course, run a search for this). Next, click the link for "Turn Windows Features On and Off". This will bring up a list of features that you can check or un-check depending on whether you would like to make use of them or not. So what can you safely turn off? If you are unsure about a component and whether or not you need it, a quick Google search should you determine what it does so that you can make an informed decision. When finished making your changes, click OK.

TRY A DEFRAG

Some sources also recommend performing a Defrag to attempt to speed up a sluggish system (3). Defragging rearranges data stored on the computer's hard drive in order to make it easier (hence faster) to access. This can lead to better performance, including startup times. To access this tool in Vista, go to the Control Panel, System and Maintenance, Administrative Tools, Defragment Your Hard Drive (3).

STARTUP AND SHUTDOWN SOUNDS

Turning off the startup and shutdown sounds has been suggested as a possible way to speed up a system as well (2). To do this, go to Control Panel, Sounds and Audio Devices, Sounds tab, and in Program Events select "No Sound" for those particular events.

There are a number of other more complex tweaks and tricks mentioned out there for those who are interested. The ones listed here should provide the average user with a good place to start when trying to speed up their computer's startup times.
