Getting rid of cold sores

For this topic, I would define cold sore as the open lesion caused by herpes simplex. Anti-viral over-the-counter treatments will probably ease symptoms. My particular choice is to prevent the problem from happening. Standard extracts of shiitake, reishi, or maitake mushrooms will probably prevent an outbreak. The lentinan component in these mushrooms should enhance the immune system.

Without standard extracts, low concentration of lentinan in shiitake, reishi, or maitake mushrooms are unlikely to help. An excellent update on the nature of lentinan can be found at http://www.drugs.com/npp/lenti nan.html which includes detailed discussions from many points of expertise. The drugs.com web page describes how lentinan enhanced the effects of AZT against HIV, during in vitro studies.

Beyond these remedies, if the problem continues, I would seek a research team of physicians who are experts in the human immune system. This would be required if there are complications such as any acquired or auto immune deficiency. If a transplant or other condition that requires suppressing the immune system exists, then self-treatment or over-the-counter tools should be decided by a doctor.

Cold sores, as described at http://www.mayoclinic.com/heal th/cold-sore/DS00358 cannot be permanently cured nor prevented. Cold sores are also called fever blisters. The Mayo Clinic article states that the two types of herpes simplex virus might cause cold sores both on the face and in the genital area. After the original herpes infection, it seems that any number of conditions can cause outbreaks.

The Mayo Clinic article describes several possible triggers, and emphasizes the fact that cold sores will heal in about ten days even without any treatment. However, the contagious nature of herpes simplex viruses requires some avoidance of contact while outbreaks are happening. Avoiding exposure to the sun, or sunblock, can help to prevent outbreaks. Stress, colds, flu, and lack of rest can be triggers.

An article at http://www.abreva.com/triggers _Cause.aspx mentions fever, menstrual hormones, and trauma, such as prolonged dental work, as possible triggers. The abreva.com article has excellent advice on how to deal with each trigger, including prevention by proper nutrition, regular exercise, and maintaining a healthy mind, body, and spirit. Keep the body and skin hydrated. Avoid very cold weather.

Abreva states that cold sores can be caused by many different conditions. I would add that any cause might have some unique aspect which affects only a few people, or perhaps affects only you. In my experience, food allergies often triggered a massive facial outbreak. The standard extracts of shiitake, reishi, and maitake mushrooms have provided years of prevention for me. Keep personal records for yourself.
