Endometriosis is a painful and chronic condition in which tissue similar to that which lines the uterus is found outside the uterus in other areas such as in the abdomen, on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, vagina or elsewhere. Each month during the menstrual cycle this tissue breaks down and sheds. The problem is that it has no way of leaving the body. The tissue develops into growths and lesions. Internal bleeding, pain and inflammation often result. Endometriosis is a common condition that affects over 5 million females.

What are the symptoms of endometriosis?

Pain before and during menstruation
Fatigue
Stomach upset
Pain during intercourse
Infertility
Severe cramps
Lower back pain

What is the cause of endometriosis?

The cause of endometriosis is unknown although there are several theories. It is believed that heredity may play a role in the development of endometriosis. It is also thought that the fault may lie in an immune system problem as well as a possible genetic defect.

How is endometriosis diagnosed?

Besides performing a physical examination your physician may want to have an ultrasound and/or MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) done in order to get a look at the pelvic region. A definitive diagnosis requires a laparascopy. A laparascopy is a procedure in which a small incision is made in the abdomen and a small tube with a light is placed inside. A small tissue sample referred to as a biopsy may be removed for microscopic examination if no growths are seen.

What is the treatment for endometriosis?

There is no cure for endometriosis. Pain medication may be prescribed to alleviate discomfort. Hormone treatments such as birth control pills or shots may be the best option. Surgery may become necessary if the growths are severe.

Living with endometriosis

Millions of women live with endometriosis. Some experience severe symptoms that affect their daily lives while others may have very mild symptoms that rarely interfere with their activities. Education and support are two major components of living with endometriosis. Educate yourself about endometriosis and stay informed about research and new treatment options. Join a support group. It can be very beneficial to share your experiences with others who are going through the same thing. One of the largest obstacles of endometriosis is infertility. Women who suffer from endometriosis may have difficulty getting pregnant. Talk to your doctor to examine all available options.
