There are thousands of entrepreneurs using affiliate programs to make thousands and in some cases, even millions of dollars online. One of the reasons affiliate programs are so appealing to so many people is the automated nature of this type of business model. If you take your time and set things up properly, you can basicaly run your business on autopilot. The icing on the cake is that most of these affiliate programs are free to join. When you join an affiliate program you are assigned an affiliate ID which you will use to market the products of your chosen merchant. Everytime you make a sale you will be payed a percentage of the total sale price to you as an affiliate commission. These commissions can be anything from 10% to 100% of the total sale price. Here are some basic steps you should follow when deciding what affiliate programs to promote and how to promote them.

Step 1:
Find your why. First off, if you want to become successful at anything in life you have to have a WHY. What on earth is a WHY, you say? Your WHY is the reason WHY you want to be successful. The reason WHY you want to start a business. You need to be specific with your WHY. It's not good enough to just say, "I want to make money". You should have a compelling reason that's pushing you forward with a force so great that it will push you right through the obstacles in your path and right over the hurdles in your way. Your WHY could be that you want to put your kids through college, quit your dead end job or go on a cruise around the world. It can be anything that compells you to be a better you. I can't decide your WHY for you. Only you know what motivates you the most. Your WHY will be what gets you through the tough times. It will be the reason you never give up.

Step 2:
Know your where. You need to know WHERE you're going. Have a specific financial destination in mind. How are you going to get to WHERE you want to be in life unless you know WHERE it is that you want to go. When you go on vacation you need a roadmap and you're going to need a financial roadmap (Goals!) to get you to WHERE you want to be financialy in life. Be specific about how much money you want to make and how long you are going to give yourself to make it. Then write it all down. If your situation changes, you can adjust your goals accordingly.

Step 3:
Decide what you want to sell. Going out and finding the hottest selling product on the internet and then trying to sell it is probably not a winning solution to this problem.
