Music makes the world sing in harmony. It can heal, uplift, help force someone to stand on their own two feet and praise the heavens above. It can unite and give power to those who feel weak, while allowing others to speak when their voices cannot be heard. It gives sight to those who cannot see and allows freedom to those imprisoned by their own hate, through a simple rhyme it's the most magnificent and magical form of expression known. Enjoyed by billions in all different languages and shared by all ages, without the hindrance of race, creed, color or ethnicity. It's often said music comes from the heart and the power of it can even help to heal.
I truly believe it can.
When I was pregnant with my third child, after losing the second, the pregnancy so rough I thought most days were going to be spent praying to the porcelain God as he claimed my inner strength with every wretched heave. I would go back to my bedroom while my husband put my feet up on the pillows arranged at the foot of the bed, and I would wait as he grabbed the CD player and ear phones.
I had never done this sort of thing with my first son, play music to my unborn child nesting deep within belly while growing. I thought it crazy, unborn children being able to hear anything outside the womb. However, this time was different. This time I was willing to do anything, silly or not, to help keep my precious baby safe while I waiting for his development to take shape. I couldn't lose another one you see. Not again, the heartache of it too painful to even contemplate.
When my son was born I knew immediately something was wrong. He was different from most babies. More than that though, I just knew. At six months he wasn't moving much. By eight months old he was still sick, not growing and by this point we'd moved and spent countless hours and money helping us while going back and forth to Children's Hospital as the doctors tried to figure out what was wrong.
He was cute our son. Blond curly hair, deep baby blue eyes and a smile that could reach deep into your heart to capture you. He didn't speak and didn't walk, but he danced. Well sort of danced, his toes began moving to a beat before he could even crawl. I still picture him in his rock and bounce spinning round and round, head bobbing and shaking to the tune of Led Zeppelin, The Sound of Music, Kenny Chesney and Toby Keith. Music was the first thing and one of the few things that caused my son to smile.
Music was also my son's first language spoken
