There are many different ways people use to drive traffic to a website. One of the easiest ways is to use a traffic exchange. Traffic exchanges are sites where members surf each others sites and in turn, ge their sites shown to other members. Many of these are considered crappy traffic because people do not actually have to be in front of their computer to see your site. Then there is paid traffic where you pay people to gain traffic from sites for you. This could involve having domains similar to yours directed to your domain or even having a pay per click campaign run where the landing page is your website.
Another way you can get traffic literally thrown at your site is through social media. Social media is not high quality traffic but it can bring a large number of users to your website in a very short period of time. Stumble Upon is the EASIEST way to get traffic to your site. Users with "power" accounts can just thumbs up your site and 2500 hits can easily come your way. Find three or four more people to thumbs up your site and you will find your site getting hits for several days. Digg is another similar situation where if you can hit the front page many people have gotten so much traffic that it has caused their web servers to fail. The results from Digg just hit their server and cause a traffic situation similar to that of a Denial of Service attack.
Another way to drive traffic to your site is through a more traditional means of paper advertising. You can distribute leaflets and business cards in an area and hope that many people will visit because the information is locally related. However, this is often a very difficult method to master for someone who has done primarily web marketing due to the fact that it involves marketing in an area that is already highly marketed. You may also not have much luck due to the fact that this method will require people to go the extra mile and actually pull up a web browser to visit your site instead of being online already using the other methods. Anyway you look at it driving traffic to your website can be done via a wide variety of techniques and multiple techniques should always be applied.
