Education (or lack thereof): America is getting dumber

by Brooke Hart

Created on: April 27, 2008

Over the past fifty years, America has gone into a regression of the educational system as well as the factors that contribute to individuals who are interested in learning. The loss of knowledge is one that is streamlining America for a work force, and as a result, is causing for the inability to analyze, critically think or contribute to society in a higher manner. The plot to dumb down the American system, and the way in which this approach has succeeded is one that is continually causing the younger generations to be lost in the midst of learning without knowing.

NO CHILD LOST

If you are a teacher, you know how this program has led to a backfire among the educational system. This program was not designed to assist children in learning more about math, reading or science. Instead, it was designed in order to bombard students with factual information and memorization in which they did not have to think about or grow into learning. More than this, it has subjected teachers to taking more time to do paper work than to be able to teach classrooms in a constructive manner. The result is that not only are most of the children lost, but so are those who are designed to instruct them. Just like the other 'mandatory' tests, the design is to stop children from thinking and to only learn information that causes them to be almost robotic.

REGULATING KNOWLEDGE

Before the act for 'no child lost' were mandates and curriculum's that were being imposed by the government in order to cause children to stop thinking and to simply learn. Memorization, multiple choice questions and "standards" are some of the many obvious examples of what has been used in order to cause children to be dumbed down. More than this, knowledge has been regulated according to those who reinforce what should or should not be learned. The Department of Labor, constructed from the federal government, is in charge of setting the curriculum, not so children will have the capacity to think, but instead so they can hold a stronger American work force. This is one that simply answers the questions without a thought process attached to it.

RE-INFORCING STUPIDITY

At more levels than one, the concept of being intelligent is being lost. When children began to think too much, began to progress into new innovations and into technology, the government began to step in. This was first seen by the cut in funding for those who were in school programs. The reinforcement was seen in computers not being able to be in schools,
