To be successful at your home business, good time management skills are a must, along with discipline and flexibility.
Having a home based business gives you an incredible birds eye view of business ~ you must wear every hat, become an expert in whatever you take on, as well as also reap the rewards of a profitable job well done. How do you accomplish that with daily distractions as well as a busy schedule?
Use the calendar software that came with your computer. No calendar software? Try Google calendar if you don't want to or can't afford the investment of software. Use of a calendar right on your computer and maintaining it keeps you from making multiple appointments at the same time or overlapping appointments with clients. The calendar also simply keeps you straight and you can often also post tasks that need to get done as well plus keep track of progress.
Set your home office up in an area of the home where you are least likely to be disturbed by the daily goings on. That's critical. Kids, pets, other family members who may be home need to understand and learn that when it's work time, it's really work time. The same goes for neighbors who know you work from home and call you during work hours. This is not a case of "oh you can do that later". Treat your home business as though it was the 9-5 job you left behind. Because you really didn't leave the job behind........... just the boss and the co-workers. Be firm yet polite and let people know that they are cutting in on your work time and they can always contact you after hours.
If you speak to clients on the phone more often than not, consider using a headset and a VOIP phone service so you can simply speak to the caller using your headset and mic. Two benefits ~ the customer doesn't hear the background noise of children or pets, and you can keep working whilst speaking, not losing valuable time.
Plan out your day, what has to get done, what can get done, and what really isn't mission critical to the day. Task management, if you will. Be disciplined enough to stick with it. Again the calendar with task management capabilities comes in handy so you can note progress, problems, and other issues and stay on target.
Take breaks. Take short breaks. Your mind needs this, and your numb butt will thank you. Go get a cup of tea, go take a walk in the garden, walk the dog, take a short walk around the block. Need milk? Walk to the corner store instead of driving. Good for your circulation, and good for your brain. No breaks translate into your brain shutting down and you develop symptoms of burnout. Breaks are healthy. Just be disciplined enough to get back to work, pick up where you left off and get the work done.
By efficiently plotting out your day, and organizing tasks, work, meetings with clients, being disciplined and prioritizing, you will be well on the road to home business success!
