Well, well, well....who knew I would find the perfect topic to write about for my very first article so quickly? "How to gain employment with a BA in English" is a very intriguing topic indeed. First of all, I would like to begin by stating that I have a BA in English and I actually chose this as my field of study, on purpose. I encountered many an Arts student during my studies who ended up with this focus by accident and I was immediately posed the question, "You did English on purpose!?!" To that I respond with a loud and albeit somewhat aggressive, yes! You see, I love literature. I love the art of the written word and I find exploring other people's work simply fascinating. I am also very good at getting top marks in university English courses, but that is an aside, I assure you. While pursuing my Major in English, many people would ask me what I expect to do with this degree; teach English, perhaps? Many were stunned to know that I had no intention to do so. In fact, I often would respond that I would love to instruct at the university level someday but I feel I am too young right now. I feel that to be an outstanding university professor of English I need some life experience first. One day, while serving a man another beer at a local bar where I was employed as a barmaid,(where, incidentally, was the only place I could get employment at the time) he told me that BA stood for Back Again! Clever, this man, drunk, but clever. At the time, however, I couldn't help but feel that there was some truth to his slurred response. (Did I mention I hated being a barmaid?)
I had put out more than sixty resumes and the only response I received was this bar and Wal-mart and of course the bar tipped better. I have found my career path to be extremely unfulfilling and frustrating, to say the least. The problem with a BA in English is that there seems to be some kind of stigma attached to it that I do not completely understand. I would love nothing more than to work in the local newspaper, but they were fully staffed.. Perhaps, edit some of the local publications, but of course they didn't need anyone either. Oh, I know, I'll try beginning at the bottom at the radio station and work my way up to where I do my own stories, but wouldn't you know it, they are not hiring either. Well, I guess I'll try becoming a full time novelist. Yes, that is what I would truly like to be, but wait I do have to eat in the meantime!
I am not trying to persuade
