Poetry: Unspoken thoughts

by Ivy Satre

Created on: April 26, 2008

I can feel his warmth standing next to me.
What I wouldn't give to place my head on his chest?
To feel his strong arm around my shoulder.

Arms brush against one another for a lingering moment.
It was enough if that was all there was to be.
I'll snatch that feeling up and relish it in my memory always.

I wonder how long I can keep him there.
What story or joke has he not already heard from me?
How long can we pause in this subtle secret touch?
Do I dare try for more and hope no one notices?

The moments left with him are slipping through my fingertips like a broken hourglass.
How do I stop them?
How can I freeze this moment in time?

He's turning to say goodbye.
The seconds flash by me as if in a fast forward trance.
But then he gives me a hug.
Time stops.
The roar of the crowd is snuffed out.
He holds me tightly as if not to let go.
A perfect fit.
I close my eyes and try to burn this soon to be memory into my mind.
He squeezes tighter and then lets go.

Did he know?
Was he also longing for this moment when we touched?
