What is endometriosis?

Endometriosis is a condition where endometrium, the tissue that lines the uterus, grows in places it should not. The out of place tissue responds to the menstrual cycle in the same way as uterine lining does. It grows, build up and then breaks down. The problem is that when uterine tissue grows outside the uterus it cannot leave the body the way it is supposed to, in the form of menstrual bleeding. This results in lesions, inflammation, fluid buildup and scar tissue that can cause extreme pain, infertility and many other problems.

Common symptoms of endometriosis include constipation, fatigue, diarrhea, painful sex, painful menstruations, tenderness of the pelvic area, painful urination and hip joint pain. On average a woman visits 4 to 5 doctors about her pain & concerns before she is accurately diagnosed with endometriosis.

Some women have growing concerns about endometriosis leading to ovarian cancer. The most common type of ovarian cancer is epithelial adenocarcinoma. Only about 2% of women with this type of ovarian cancer have been diagnosed with endometrioid clear-cell adenocarcinomas which has been linked to endometriosis. According to recent research doctors do not believe those suffering from endometriosis have an increased risk for ovarian cancer.

The most common way to diagnose and treat endometriosis is with Laparoscopy. The procedure typically entails the use of a laser to break down and remove the misplaced tissue. Other less invasive methods, such as hormone therapy and birth control, are used to control pain and limit the number of menstrual cycles a woman experiences.

There is no doubt that endometriosis wreaks havoc on the body, doctors understand this well. The part many doctors miss is how the condition affect the emotional wellbeing of the suffer. Undiagnosed and untreated cases of endometriois make intimacy difficult in relationships, it goes hand in hand with infertility, it makes the sufferer feel like they are imagining things and it is extremely frustrating and demoralizing.

Endometriosis affects about 5 1/2 million women and girls within the USA and Canada. Sadly millions more suffer the side effects and have yet to be officially diagnosed worldwide. Endomeriosis is a huge concern for women but it is really just the beginning of a much larger problem: hormonal/ immune dysfunction.

If you suspect you may be suffering from endometriosis you need to speak with your gynecologist and begin the testing process as soon as possible. Be persistent about your concerns, track your symptoms and seek support from those experiencing the same things. Most importantly don't stop until you have the answers and relief you desire.
