System Restore Utility and choose to "undo" a previous restore if you like (3).
At some point, you may decide that you want to create your own restore point. This is a good idea if you are about to install a program, update or driver that has a reputation for instability, or whose origins you aren't extremely confident in. To create a restore point in Windows Vista, go to Start, Control Panel, System and Maintenance, System, and System Protection (3). This will bring you to the System Protection tab of "System Properties", and there is "Create" button at the bottom that you can use to manually create a restore point. Next, you can enter in a name for the restore point that you are creating. Give it an informative name such as "Before Installing ProgramX" so that you will recognize later if you need to perform a restore. When your name is chosen, click Create and the restore point will be created. A message will tell you that your restore point has been created, and you can click OK (3).
System Restore is a useful tool that has helped many users avoid tedious re-installs of their operating systems over the years. It is a good tool to keep in mind as part of your Windows troubleshooting repertoire.
