The MUSEUM of CONTEMPORARY ART is an eye opener for many folks endeared to traditional art masters. This museum showcases the "new" master artists of the modern age with exhibits by Herman Bas, Phillip Estlund, Tracey Emin, Kyle Trowbridge and the famous Cuban artist Jose Bedia. MOCA, as the locals call it, is a fairly new jewel on the Miami art scene, established in 1981, it is garnering resoundingly positive praise from New York to Paris to L.A. and back to Miami. This gem is located in North Miami, but it is worth the trip.
The LOWE ART MUSEUM located on the University of Miami campus, began in 3 classrooms in 1950 and expanded to its own building in 1952, to become the first art museum in Southern Florida. This art collection has been selected by art critics and scholars as having one of the best Native American exhibits in the US. It also has an outstanding Ancient American collection, along with an ever expanding Asian Art collection.
The HISTORICAL MUSEUM of SOUTHERN FLORIDA definitely should be on your excursion list. This museum houses collections that explore and explain the regional folk-life, history and archeology of South Florida and the Caribbean countries of Cuba, Haiti, Virgin Islands and the Bahamas.
VIZCAYA MUSEUM and GARDENS is a unique museum registered as a National Historic Landmark. This Italian style villa captures the soul of most visitors. It is a wonderful example of th the opulent lifestyle and culture of an era of exceptional wealth that manifested in the semi-tropical exotic and opulent Miami Beach area. This mansion built and owned by the American Industrialist John Deering, has many festive events all year that you can attend and enjoy the gardens, mansion and activities presented in this elegant magic place.
From Palmetto Bay to Coral Gables to the Heart of metro Miami's Cultural Arts District to North Miami there are a vast array of museums and art exhibits to experience for young and "older" folks. If you live in Miami support your arts community and take advantage of the educational and cultural experiences it offers. When visiting this lively city take time to breath and enjoy the unique creative museums.
