Windows safe mode is also known as a "Windows diagnostics mode." It loads a minimal set of drivers to operate the computer after some errors prevent it from loading and running in normal mode. The minimal drivers may result in the display being more simple and basic in safe mode. Safe mode may or may not allow an Internet connection, depending on the type of safe mode selected (e.g., with or without networking) and the operating system version.
There are a number of good reasons for starting up Windows computers in safe mode.
First of all, if there has occurred an error in installing a new hardware or software item, then safe mode is a start to repairing or removing the item.
Safe mode will bring up windows in a reduced operating mode where only enough software is turned on to run the computer and access operating system settings. The idea is that software and configuration of software and hardware will not run and the opportunity is provided to provide a correction to the operating system.
Sometimes the correction can be applied in safe mode and then the computer will be able to run in normal mode afterward. At other times the correction may be the removal of the item and returning the computer to a previously known good configuration.
Second, if there is a virus or spyware infection on the computer, then starting up in safe mode may prevent spreading of the infection and even permit you to remove or repair the infection. Some antivirus and antispyware tools are designed to run in Windows safe mode to provide maximum protection and benefit and to prevent such infections by a more thorough cleaning and removal of the bad code.
Third, safe mode can help to resolve incompatibilities from choosing the wrong settings for software and hardware.
You can access Windows safe mode by pressing the "F8" key or "Ctrl" key during startup. You can also call safe mode during reboot after running the "msconfig" command. Once booted in safe mode, the words "Safe Mode" will be displayed prominently on the screen, and you may be asked to confirm using this mode.
