The most important thing to remember is that not all children with energy have ADHD. If you are concerned that your child may suffer from ADHD take him to the doctor for testing. There are a range of different medications which are available as well as natural alternatives and life style changes that can help. There are many families who choose not to put their child on prescription medication and have great success in monitoring and controlling ADHD. Be sure to sit down and discuss with your family which choice is right for you.
-Children who suffer from ADHD require more assistance during homework in order to stay on task. Try to keep the distractions to a minimum as your child will be easily distracted. Sit by him/her while they are doing their work, or at least be in the same room in order to be a visual reminder to them. Gentile reminders are encouraging.
-Try to allow your child as much natural light as possible, as they could become irritated by the high frequency at which florescent and other lights vibrate at. Allow them the room to move around while they do homework, not everyone needs to sit still in order to complete an assignment. As long as they are getting the work done, there is nothing wrong with a wiggling or fidgeting.
-Monitor and limit your child's TV and video game playing time. While they may be sitting still for you, their mind is being bombarded by so many images per second that they are actually becoming more stimulated. This could make it more difficult for him/her to function in an acceptable manner after the TV or video game time is over.
-Monitor your child's diet. Proteins burn slower, giving your child a longer and more stable source of energy to draw from. Avoid sugars and artificial additives as much as possible. Making sure they are getting plenty of Omega's in their diet as it facilitates brain function.
-Routine is also very beneficial. Try to make a schedule and stick to it. Write the schedule down for your child to keep with him so that he can check back on it often to see what is coming next. Being able to look at the schedule, which may also include specific times, will help him to see how much time is left before the next activity begins.
-Remember to show your child love and understanding. They are just as upset with themselves and frustrated with the situation as you are. Knowing that they are loved and accepted just the way they are takes a great deal of stress and worry off their minds, allowing them to try harder.
