If this argument were to simply come down to the question of "Is it going to be more historically significant if a woman or a black man wins the presidency?" I do not know that I would have the answer to that question. However, there is no doubt in my mind that the election of Obama as President would forever change our history books.
America needs Barak Obama.
For too long America has become more and more disinterested in politics and, with few exceptions, has had Presidents that are mere mouthpieces for special interest groups, their political party and financial supporters. The election of Hillary Clinton would be no different. She continues to run a negative campaign that refuses to focus on the real issues at hand.
Obama, however, brings a fresh look to politics that America is in dire need of if it is to climb out of its economic recession, begin to change its environmental and foreign policies and initiate true social reform.
In his debate on April 17th in Philadelphia, he stressed the importance of concentrating on the RIGHT things when criticizing and evaluating candidates. It may be easier to criticize Obama for not wearing a flag pin or associating with Bill Ayers than it would be to really address the issues at hand, but Obama wants to make sure that we DO address these tough issues that really matter.
"In those circumstances, for us to be obsessed with this - these
kinds of errors I think is a mistake. And that's not what our campaign
has been about. " - Obama
Obama blieves in a bottom-up as in addition to a top-down change strategy. By involving people in their own government, they believe in their own power to initiate change. He is initiating a grass roots movement throughout the country in order to help start this process. Ordinary people are such an integral part of his campaign thus far - donations, canvassing, on-line organization - and this shows how he will run his administration: with the people.
Obama doesn't accept money from lobbyists or political action committees - he's raised nearly $80 million from donations under $200 from private individuals.
As far as specific issues are concerned, Obama's belief in the cap-and-trade system proves that he is comitted to lowering the U.S.'s emissions. This system is the most likely to succeed and may even stimulate economic growth instead of retarting it like critics initially thought. His Health Care plan is similar to that of Hillary's as well is his promise to withdraw troops from Iraq. He plans to repeal Bush's tax cuts on higher-income households and is truly comitted to helping the lower and middle class families get back on their feet.
This is the kind of man that needs to take control of this country and help CHANGE it into the nation that it once promised to be. He will be the historic candidate, not Hillary.
