h. Is the front desk covered 24 hours?
i. What is the monthly rent on the apartments / lease arrangements/security?
j. Ask for a sample menu.
k. Ask for a sample weekly activity schedule.
l. Do residents go on local trips? How often?
m. How can residents do local shopping/ drugstore/ banking?
n. What is the male/female ratio of residents?
o. Under what circumstances can a resident no longer live in this facility?
6. Bring your relative to visit the final list of possible facilities. Your relative will have many questions of their own for the facility director.
The facility will take you on a tour, show you sample apartments/rooms, and answer your questions. While on the tour, you will get a general sense of the resident population's age and capacities, which will help you and your relative decide if this facility is a good match for them.
7. Make no decisions while on a facility tour. It is very helpful to return home, discuss and weigh all the options before making a decision. You can sometimes leave a small deposit on a room, or come back and leave the deposit before signing the lease.
By utilizing these tips, I was able to take my father to visit four good assisted living facilities and to choose one, where he is presently located. We are both comfortable with the choice that he made.
