Running on the road is safe. But like any sport or activity there is risk. Take a look at an alternative to road running; running on a treadmill. Why do you think the emergency rip cord is there? In the event you lose your balance and fall you don't get rug burn from bouncing off the tread.

The major risks for running on the road are cars, bikers (the kind without the engine is more dangerous to runners believe it or not), people with dogs and even sometimes other runners. Following a few simple rules of ettiquite and safety will lower the risks associated to running on the road and make it more enjoyable.

Follow pedestrian rules - run opposing traffic so that you can see the cars and bikers coming towards you. Often drivers, even in the middle of the day, do not notice a runner on the side of the road. It is up to YOU to watch them and try to make eye contact when ever possible. Same with bikers, make sure they see you and acknowledge you. Try to have them pass to your outside because they are faster and going with traffic.

Dogs - you never know if they are friendly so give them a WIDE berth whenever possible. Look at their owners for clues to their level of friendliness. If they owner looks nervous, cross to the other side of the street!

Pedestrians and other runners - If you are going to pass pedestrians or other runners, try to make some noise before you are right on top of them. If you startle them you may get maced or hit with a bag. The reason I say make noise vs speaking to them is speaking usually results in the startled effects I just mentioned. Inevitable you are going to startle someone, just say your sorry and run faster so that they don't retaliate you once the shock wares off.

Insurance - Even when you reduce your risks, accidents happen. Get yourself a RoadID (www.roadid.com) tag for your shoe. Its a metal plate engraved with your info (name, phone number to call in case you become road cheese) attached to a Velcro strap which goes right on your laces. Have one for each pair of running shoes you own.

Hope this gets you off the treadmill (those things are dangerous anyway) and onto the road!
