Should Christians celebrate Halloween? As a child I was never allowed to go trick or treating with the other children of the village, and I felt this horribly unfair. My parents are firm Christians and since the days when they banned me from going out to celebrate Halloween with the other children I have realised that their reasons for doing so were sensible and sound, although at the time they seemed horribly unfair.
Halloween has been taken over as a commercial holiday and another way for shops to make a little extra money at what would otherwise be a slow time of year for them. However, if you look into the ideas being presented at Halloween they are, at best, questioable in the extreme. The holiday seems to be based around the central idea of evil and 'scary things' with witches being a prime example of a costume given to young children.
If you has followed my train of thought this far then you will understand when I say that a Christian parent would not be responsible in letting their child dress up and pretend to be something evil, when every other day of the year they are told to be nice and that witches are not something that they should want to be (Leviticus). Why, then, should a Christian adult want to dress up (or allow their child to) as satan himself? Surely this is not the type of thing that God wants from their life. What begins as a bit of fun can have consequences on the way the rest of the community views you and also possibly the church to which you belong.
Now to move on to the tradition of 'trick or treating'. This may start out as a bit of fun, but when you look at it from another point of view the words 'trick or treat' become a threat. It is a method of extortion that the public have deemed acceptable, while children cause damage to property and intimidate people in the neighbourhood. Why should people give candy to children so they are not subjected to a humiliating 'trick'?
In conclusion, I believe that not only should a Christian not celebrate halloween, but that the holiday should be scrapped altogether as it is a celebration of all that is wrong and dark in the world and 'trick or treating' should not be allowed.
