American Idol Season 7 contestants: David Cook

he still gave his all with an outstanding vocal that gave me shivers. Next week is Neil Diamond week, which ought to suit his voice very well - I can't wait to hear what he does.

What is it about him that I like so much? There is a gravelly quality to his voice, particularly when he sings lower notes, that reminds me of artists such as Bryan Adams and Rod Stewart. But there is more to him than this, because every time he sings a song, he manages to make it sound completely different, whether it is his own version of a song, or a version of a version. What is more, each week he comes up with something different - he has sung rock songs, ballads, even modern opera and he still manages to put his mark on what he sings. I have not, in all the time I have watched these shows, seen an artist that is able to do this consistently. Many have likened him to Chris Daughtry - but Daughtry, although good, always sounded the same. David doesn't.

I like him so much that I would happily buy an album that included some of the numbers he has sung on the show. And that is saying something. I have steered well clear of similar offerings by other contestants in the past. I cannot tell you how many times I have gone to YouTube to listen to him singing Always Be My Baby, Billie Jean, Hello and whatever else I can find. I have even listened to songs he wrote and released himself before going on Pop Idol. I have loved it all, and as soon as he releases an album, I will be buying it.

Like all the American Idol contestants, David Cook has his critics. Many think that because he has already released an album, he should not even be in the show. He is certainly a seasoned performer at the age of 25 - he has played in bands as well as releasing his own album and has started to make a name for himself in his home state. Does this mean that he shouldn't be allowed to perform? I don't think so. He is talented, but despite working hard, obviously hasn't got where he wants to be, so why shouldn't he have a shot at stardom?

I don't know whether he will win the whole competition. Based on talent, I think he should win hands-down. I certainly hope that he will be in the top two - there are now five contestants left, but I think it is fairly safe to say that unless anything drastic happens, Jason Castro, Brooke White and Syesha Mercado are on their way out. However, I don't think it matters whether he does become the next Idol or not; he has a great career in front of him and I can't wait to see what he has in store for us. I'll be an avid watcher of the show as long as he's in it, that's for sure.
