The first time I sang karaoke was in a pub in Stanbury, West Yorkshire in the UK. We happened to wander into the pub, called Wuthering Heights, after a long trek on the wild and windy wuthering moors near Top Withens (reportedly an inspiration for Emily Bronte's novel, Wuthering Heights. We stopped at the pub for a drink and immediately struck up a conversation with the people who were minding the inn while the owners were on holiday. They were an amiable group getting ready for an evening party at the pub. They had obtained a karaoke machine for the occasion and were wondering if they would be able to get anyone to try it. I love to sing so I said that I would give it a shot to see how it worked. They were more than happy to oblige so I ripped into a rousing chorus of Blueberry Hill to great acclaim. One of the tenants wandered downstairs complaining that the "radio" just disturbed his afternoon nap. Needless to say, the group that would be throwing party invited us to return that night. Built-in karaoke crowd-rousers, I suppose you could say. We said, why not? Sounds like fun. And was it ever! I enjoyed myself so much and urge anyone who has never tried karaoke to get to the nearest venue and give it a shot. As you may have guessed, I was the first one to get the crowd going with (you got it) Blueberry Hill. Then my boyfriend took a turn singing an Otis Redding classic. By that time, the group was more lubricated and jazzed enough to try out the new toy. I corralled a group of women and we did Leader of the Pack with my boyfriend doing the motorcycle sound effects. It was a night to remember and no one seemed to want it to end. The karaoke machine added so much to the festivities that I can't imagine the evening without it. I enjoyed how easy it was to sing along with the supplied music and lyrics. Anyone who likes to sing should try it. Don't be shy. Go for it.
