My Muse
It was a Saturday afternoon in the spring of 1977. Jackie and I were in his basement messing around with his CB radio. We had a mobile antenna sticking out the window and were goofing on people we knew who couldn't figure out who we were because the power level was so low. While flipping through the channels I thought I heard a girl's voice so I stopped on that channel and gave the usual call. "Breaker break come on back". And surprising enough it was a girl that answered. I could barely hear her and I do not recall any details of the conversation. But I do recall thinking she must be a hottie because she sounded so sweet. Somehow one of us got the others phone number, and so it began. Her name was Lisa and she lived in Germantown really close to East Falls. She told me she went to Germantown Friends and she told me she was two years younger than I was. Our birthdays were the same day, September 3rd, both Virgo's. She described herself as a short Italian girl with long brown hair and brown eyes. And she sounded even better on the phone than she did on the CB. After a week or so of wonderful conversations we decided to meet. We picked a day that was supposed to be warm and sunny and she tells me to meet her at School House Lane and Wissahickon Avenue at 3:45. The reasons why I decided not to take my bike are way too complicated to go into in this story.
The day comes and I'm on my way by 3. Walking up towards Henry Avenue I think to myself that if I cut through Daisy field and Hermit lane, I could find a path up the other side of the Henry Avenue bridge and save a half mile. So imagine me dodging cars on Lincoln Drive and climbing up that hill. It was much harder and took longer than I expected but I finally made it up to Henry Avenue and the Textile school. And the walk down School House Lane was much farther than I thought. A little jogging took care of some time but as my destination came in sight I slowed down. I didn't want to be panting and sweating too hard when I was trying to make my first impression. As I was coming up to that intersection I could see two girls coming around the corner. They saw me coming and sat down on a wall there outside the School Lane House apartments. It wasn't hard to spot the short girl with long hair. Coming up to them I said hi and sat down myself. My first impression was that she looked a little young. I was 15,
