When you swallow food, the esophagus, also known as the "food pipe" is responsible for moving it into the stomach through the action of wave-like muscle contractions. In the stomach, the food is broken down by acid and enzymes. In cases where the muscles are not performing their tasks, the acidic stomach contents back up into the esophagus causing the symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux (GER), otherwise known as acid reflux.
Symptoms of Acid Reflux
There are three common symptoms associated with acid reflux:
- Heartburn: Strong burning sensation that radiates from the stomach into the chest and throat; generally occurs in connection with a heavy meal, bending over, lifting or lying down
- Dyspepsia: Pain in the upper abdomen, feeling of fullness in the stomach and nausea after eating
- Regurgitation: Feeling of the acid backing up in the throat - sometimes the acid regurgitates into the mouth and is experienced as a wet burp; although uncommon, it may come out as vomit
Other common symptoms include chronic sore throat, trouble swallowing, coughing or other respiratory symptoms and chest sensations or pain.
Reports have also suggested that acid reflux may play a role in sinus problems including sinusitis. While acid reflux does not reach all the way to the sinuses, it may induce inflammation of nasal mucous causing a blockage of the sinuses.
Sufferers of acid reflux sometimes complain of chronic back pain. While not directly related to acid reflux, it is possible that due to finding new sleeping positions and continuous heartburn, the body becomes achy in other areas.
Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)
While gastroesophageal reflux (GER) or acid reflux is fairly common, persistent reflux that occurs more than a couple times a week is considered gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) also know as acid reflux disease. The primary symptom of GERD in adults is very frequent heartburn, as well as dyspepsia and regurgitation. Individuals suffering from GERD may also experience a dry cough, trouble swallowing or asthma-like symptoms. GERD can lead to more serious health problems.
Acid Reflux Treatment
To decrease the effects of acid reflux, people with symptoms should first try dietary and lifestyle changes. Those suffering from acid reflux should stay away from or limit the following:
- Citrus fruits
