Ancient medical science told us our minds and bodies are one. So did philosophers of old. Now, modern science and research are helping us to understand these connections.
Bill Moyers, in his book and PBS series, "Healing and the Mind," explored how modern science and research are coming to similar conclusions about the Mind and Body. Moyers' interviews with leading physicians, scientists, therapists and patients show how experts are taking a new look at the meaning of sickness and health.
Statistics from many researchers now know that stress is the No. 1 stimulus affecting so many people in today's fast paced world. No person is immune to stress.
Interestingly, Moyers interviewed a medical doctor in his book, who has taken stress and meditation to a new level. Jon Kabat-Zinn, PhD, is the founder of the Stress Reduction Clinic at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center, and Moyers asked the question, "How do your patients react when you begin to talk with them about meditation?"
Kabat-Zinn responded: "These people were not interested in meditation, yoga, swamis, gurus or all the Zen masters, or enlightenment. They're suffering, and they come because they want some relief from their suffering, and they want to reduce their stress."
Kabat-Zinn calls his service, "Stress Reduction Clinic," which demystifies what most people do not understand when the word meditation is used instead. He said people began to take to it like "ducks in water."
Whether we call it meditation or stress reduction, the practice is essential for the healing of the mind, body and spirit without outside stimulus from drugs or unnatural chemicals.
As you go through your daily activities, constantly release upsetting thoughts, negative ideas, worry, and release them to your own Inner High Healing Mind or God.
Keep in mind that it is not so much what is taking place that is causing stress as much as your handling of it, and there is no better way than to release it to the Healing Presence of God Within You.
There are several ways to do this. For lack of space, I can only point to them: take mental vacations, daily meditate on the Presence of God within you, do stretching exercises daily to relax the body, affirm everyday that the God within is in charge of your life in all areas, be open to positive changes, burn incense at home to create an atmosphere on a physical and mental level, visualize or imagine an aura of light around you, recite this affirmation daily (Wherever I am, God is), and give thanks to God daily for every good thing that happens to you which in any way relieves any stress from your life.
Don Colbert, MD, in his book, "The Bible Cure for Depression and Anxiety," suggests if you are taking antidepressants like Prosac, Zoloft, Paxil, Xanax, Ativan, Klonopin, Valium or other benzodiazepenes, consult with your physician about taking the natural herb Kava Kava.
Kava Kava has been used for centuries in the South Pacific. It is non-addictive. Passionflower is another herb that has been used as a sedative.
The end result you are searching for, however, is to treat the root causes of stress, instead of coating your mind and body with prescription drugs. Herbal medicines are more expensive and insurance doesn"t pay for them, but you'll be grateful in the long run.
