Runes have their basis in Norse Mythology and the creation myth. It is recounted in the poetic Edda and descibes how when Odin sacrificed himself on the Yggdrasil Tree he stared down into the depths of the world and probably despair and from their grabbed the runes, then when comming too he found that he had recieved wisdom, joy and prosperity. It is important when doing a rune reading to prepare yourself to become in tune to the energies around you as when interpreting the runes it is important to pick up on the universal energy. To do this meditation is a good idea if possible before you embark on divination. It is also important to have a clear picture in your mind of what you want to know the clearer you are the clearer the answer from the runes will be. The simplest reading you can do is to ask a straight forward question and choose one rune that should indicate an answer. The next simplest is to choose three runes and lay them in a straight line - the first rune will tell you what brought you to the place you find yourself in, the second rune will tell you about your current situation and the third rune is about the outcome to your query. Of, course there are many complicated runic readings such as the celtic cross or the heimdales eight but the simple ones are good for beginners. There are 25 runes
