Millions of individuals world wide suffer from joint inflammation and joint pain as a result of inflammation. Although it is true that many conditions affecting the joints are hereditary or brought on by the aging process, there are ways to manage and treat the inflammation. This article contains a brief explanation of the causes of joint inflammation, followed by some helpful tips on how to deal with it in your daily life, and some common forms of treatment.
Joint Inflammation: Causes and Symptoms
Inflammation results naturally when the white blood cells and chemicals in the body go into defense mode in order to protect us against infection, bacteria, and viruses. Under normal conditions the inflammation ceases when there is no longer a threat. In the case of joint inflammation this defense mechanism is triggered when there is no threat. Instead of fighting bacteria, the white blood cells cause damage to the joints healthy tissue.
When joint inflammation occurs you may notice redness in the inflamed area, swelling, stiffness, pain, or the joint may feel warm. These symptoms result from increased blood flow to the area, and excess fluids create swelling.
Although most joint inflammation is associated with movement, such as in the knees, hands, elbows, or feet, the sacroiliac joint is commonly affected as well. The sacroiliac joint is located between the sacrum, at the base of the spine, and the Ilium of the pelvis. Although it is not associated with movement, this joint is responsible for bearing much of the upper body weight, and is put under stress when lifting heavy objects. Severe lower back pain is often experienced as a result of sacroiliac joint inflammation.
The pain caused by joint inflammation can make performing every day tasks difficult. There is often a persistent burning pain, or a sharp aching in the inflamed area. Movement may become severely inhibited due to the inflexibility of the joint.
Effective Tips for Managing and Treating Joint Inflammation
Fortunately there are things you can do to manage and reduce inflammation of the joints. One of the best ways to do this is by maintaining a healthy diet. There are certain kinds of foods that can exasperate the problem, such as: Fried foods, red meat, soda, and pre packaged foods. Alcohol has been associated with joint complications because it produces excess uric acid, which is damaging to important joint tissue. Eating a balanced diet of whole foods like, dark green colored vegetables, fresh fruit, fish, and healthy fats such as avocado, olive oil, and raw nuts, can help manage and reduce joint inflammation.
It is important that you do not begin any exercise or stretching regimen without consulting your doctor first. Some activities and movements may increase inflammation and pain.
Physical therapy has been very effective in the treatment of joint inflammation, and particularly in treatment of the sacroiliac joint. Anti inflammatory medications are also widely used and in some severe cases a Cortisone injection may be required. Most individuals experience success with one of these forms of treatment or a combination.
If you are experiencing any of the symptoms described here, you should talk to your physician. With the proper treatment, knowledge, and nutrition, living a healthy lifestyle can be possible.
