Poetry: Don't ask

I looked at you,
You turned your head.
Though no lips moved,
It all was said.

I wished I had listened,
When you told me not to ask.
After all that was between us,
And now it all is past.

You didn't want to hurt me,
But as I held you tight.
I could feel you slip away, I saw
You walk into the night.

I didn't do anything right,
You didn't do anything wrong.
It was if we tried so hard
To make it right for too long.

So now I sit here, thinking,
Alone, with my thoughts.
Wondering, if I had not asked,
You would have again for me sought.

So never again will I ask.
To find the love I hoped I had.
"Do you love me?"
The answer is too heartbreaking, too sad.

It's easier not to know,
Than to know it never was.
That all I said was severed.
And you felt for me, never.

    Don't ask me why,
    I will not say,
Don't look at me that way,
Or I'll turn the other way.
    You speak I listen,
    You lead I follow,
    But

    Stranded between rooms,
    the admission hit us like
    colliding trees

struck down by an unseen hand.

    "Who, then?"
    I repeated,
